Holodipterus was named by White and Moy-Thomas (1940) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Holodipteridae.
It was assigned to Dipnoi by Miles (1977); to Dipteriformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Holodontidae by Campbell and Barwick (1990), Long (2010); and to Holodipteridae by van der Laan (2019).
