Legnonotus was named by Egerton (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn Tr Rhae Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Macrosemiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Macrosemiidae by Woodward (1895), Tintori and Renesto (1983), Hornung et al. (2019).
