Allothrissops was named by Nybelin (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm-u J Tith-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2,915]. It is the type genus of Allothrissopidae.
It was assigned to Pachycormiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Ichthyodectiformes by Cavin et al. (2013); and to Allothrissopidae by Arratia (2000), van der Laan (2019).
