Taxonomy
Cheirothrix was named by Pictet and Humbert (1866) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant K Camp Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Cheirothrix libanicus. It is the type genus of Cheirotricidae.

It was assigned to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cheirotricidae by Dietze (2009).
