Ichnites lithographicus was named by Oppel (1862). It is considered to be a form taxon.

It was recombined as Kouphichnium lithographicum by Kuhn (1958).

Hypornithes jurassica was named by Jaekel (1929). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a trace fossil. Its type locality is Mörnsheim tracks (PROXY), which is in a Tithonian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Solnhofen Formation of Germany. It is the type species of Hypornithes.

It was synonymized subjectively with Kouphichnium lithographicum by Brodkorb (1978).
