Prionotus was named by Lacépède (1802) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 1012]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Scorpaeniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Triglidae by Casier (1966), Fitch and Lavenberg (1983), Stringer (1998), Purdy et al. (2001), Carnevale and Godfrey (2018).
