Encrinurus squarrosus was named by Howells (1982). Its type specimen is HM A5368, an exoskeleton, and it is a mold. Its type locality is Newlands, which is in an Aeronian marine siltstone/sandstone in the Newlands Farm Formation of the United Kingdom.
