Euthynnus was named by Jordan and Gilbert (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Scombridae by Arambourg (1927); to Thunninae by Starks (1910), Bannikov (1979); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Thunnini by Klawe (1977), Collette et al. (2001), Serdy (2004).
