Prolates was named by Priem (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than-l Sepkoski's reference number: 863]. It is not extant. Its type is Lates heberti.

It was assigned to Serranidae by Patterson (1964), Weems (1999); and to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
