Estemmenosuchus uralensis was named by Chudinov (1960). Its type specimen is PIN 1758/4, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ezhovo Locality, PIN 1758, which is in an Urzhumian delta plain sandstone/conglomerate in the Russian Federation.
