Coelodus was named by Haeckel (1854) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm K Turo Sepkoski's reference number: 452,718]. It is not extant.
It was assigned to Pycnodontes by Arambourg and Joleaud (1943), Nursall (1996); to Pycnodontiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pycnodontidae by Woodward (1895), Hay (1902), Woodward (1918), Tabaste (1963), Kriwet (1999), Poyato-Ariza and Wenz (2002), Argyriou (2022).

Cranial roof - bones pierced by a pair of supratemporal vacuities , surrounded by the supraoccipital , parietal , and frontal elements . Head and opercular bones externally rugose and punctate ; two chisel - shaped teeth in each premaxilla and dentary ; tritoral teeth often exhibiting an apical indent usually with crenulated border ; oral surface of vomer convex from side to side , with teeth in five longitudinal series ; splenial dentition comprising three series of teeth with long axes more or less directly transverse , sometimes supplemented within by a small row . Neural and hæmal arches of axial skeleton of trunk not expanding sufficiently to encircle the notochord. |
