Serpianosaurus was named by Rieppel (1989). Its type is Serpianosaurus mirigiolensis.
It was assigned to Pachypleuridae by Carroll (1988); to Pachypleurosauridae by Rieppel (1989), Rieppel and Lin (1995), Rieppel (2000); and to Notosauria by Sepkoski (2002).
