Prophaethon was named by Andrews (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant.
It was assigned to Phaetontidae by Lambrecht (1933); to Phaethontidae by Mlikovsky (2002); to Pelecaniformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Prophaethontidae by Harrison and Walker (1976), Harrison and Walker (1977), Olson (1985), Carroll (1988), Bourdon et al. (2005), Bourdon et al. (2008), Mayr (2015), Mayr and Smith (2019).
