Taxonomy
Spirifer ventricosus was named by Hall (1857). It is the type species of Nucleospira.

It was recombined as Nucleospira ventricosus by Bassett and Cocks (1974), Jin and Chatterton (1997); it was recombined as Nucleospira ventricosa by Musteikis and Modzalevskaya (2002).
