Sirenavus was named by Kretzoi (1941) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l]. Its type is Sirenavus hungaricus.

It was assigned to Prorastomidae by Kretzoi (1941); to Sirenia by Heal (1973); to Sirenia by Sepkoski (2002); to Dugongidae by Carroll (1988), Domning (1996), Berta (2017); and to Halitheriinae by Domning (2018).
