Picus cafer was named by Gmelin (1788). It is extant.

It was recombined as Colaptes cafer by Miller (1911), Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Wetmore (1956); it was recombined as Colaptes auratus cafer by Clements et al. (2017).
