Speonesydrion was named by Campbell and Barwick (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: D Emsi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Speonesydrionidae.

It was assigned to Speonesydrionidae by Campbell and Barwick (1990); to Dipnoi by Campbell and Barwick (1983), Schultze (2001); to Dipteriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dipnorhynchidae by Schultze (1993), van der Laan (2019).
