Taxonomy
Saurichthys spinosa was named by Wu et al. (2018). Its type specimen is IVPP V 23062, a skeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Dawazi, Luoping County (IVPP coll), which is in a Pelsonian carbonate lime mudstone in the Guanling Formation of China.
