Taxonomy
Spatangus ungula was named by Morton (1833). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Deep Cut, Chesapeake and Delaware Canal (ANSP), which is in a Campanian marine sandstone in the Merchantville Formation of Delaware.
It was recombined as Hemiaster ungula by Clark and Twitchell (1915), Cooke (1953).
