Diploglossus was named by Wiegmann (1828). It is extant. It is the type genus of Diploglossa, Diploglossinae.
It was assigned to Diploglossinae by McDowell and Bogert (1954) and Estes (1983); and to Anguidae by Carroll (1988) and Frank and Ramus (1996).
