Necrosauridae was named by Hoffstetter (1943). It is not extant. Its type is Necrosaurus.
It was assigned to Platynota by Borsuk-Bialynicka (1984); to Squamata by Nessov (1988); to Varanoidea by Kuhn (1966), Seiffert (1975), Estes (1983) and Carroll (1988); to Anguimorpha by Alifanov (1993), Gao and Hou (1996) and Gao and Fox (1996); to Anguimorpha by Alifanov (2000); and to Anguimorpha by Peng et al. (2001).
