Cherminotus was named by Borsuk-Bialynicka (1984). It is not extant. Its type is Cherminotus longifrons.

It was assigned to Lanthanotidae by Borsuk-Bialynicka (1984), Carroll (1988); to Varanidae by Alifanov (1993), Clos (1995), Alifanov (2000); and to Varanoidea by Gao and Norell (2000).
