Taxonomy

Dolichosauridae was named by Gervais (1852). Its type is Dolichosaurus. It was considered monophyletic by Lee and Caldwell (2000).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Dolichosauridae by Paparella et al. (2018) and Caldwell et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Sauria by Gervais (1853); to Lacertilia by Zittel (1890) and Huene (1954); to Platynota by Kuhn (1946) and McDowell and Bogert (1954); to Varanoidea by Kuhn (1966), Seiffert (1975), Carroll (1988) and Dal Sasso and Pinna (1997); to Ophidiomorpha by Palci and Caldwell (2010); and to Pythonomorpha by Lee and Caldwell (2000), Paparella et al. (2018) and Caldwell et al. (2021).
