Pararaucaria was named by Wieland (1935). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Pararaucaria patagonica. It was considered unknown by Wieland (1935).

It was assigned to Cheirolepidiaceae by Wieland (1935); and to Araucariaceae by Andrews (1970).
