Howesia was named by Broom (1905). It is not extant. Its type is Howesia browni.
It was assigned to Howesiidae by Watson (1917), Benton (1985); to Rhynchosauridae by Carroll (1988); to Rhynchosauria by Dilkes (1995), Mukherjee and Ray (2015); and to Rhynchosauria by Ezcurra et al. (2016).
