Fugusuchus was named by Cheng (1980). Its type is Fugusuchus hejiapanensis.

It was assigned to Proterosuchidae by Cheng (1980); to Erythrosuchidae by Carroll (1988); and to Archosauriformes by Ezcurra (2016).
