Ornithosuchus was named by Newton (1894). It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).

It was assigned to Dinosauria by Newton (1894); to Carnosauria by Swinton (1970); to Ornithosuchidae by Watson (1917), Huene (1922), Huene (1942), Romer (1956), Walker (1964), Romer (1966), Charig (1967), Bonaparte (1969), Steel (1970), Bonaparte (1975), Carroll (1988), Benton (1990), Sereno (1991); to Archosauria by Senter (2004); and to Ornithosuchidae by Nesbitt (2011), Von Baczko and Ezcurra (2013).
