Prestosuchus was named by Huene (1942). It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).
It was assigned to Rauisuchinae by Huene (1942); to Crurotarsi by Sereno (1991); to Prestosuchidae by Parrish (1993); to Rauisuchidae by Kuhn (1966), Carroll (1988), Long and Murry (1995); and to Loricata by Nesbitt (2011), Roberto-Da-Silva et al. (2018).
