Taxonomy
Sphenosuchus was named by Haughton (1915). Its type is Sphenosuchus acutus. It is the type genus of Sphenosuchidae. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).
It was assigned to Thecodontia by Haughton (1915); to Ornithosuchidae by Watson (1917); to Pedeticosauridae by Charig (1967) and Walker (1970); to Sphenosuchidae by Huene (1922), Haughton (1924), Nopcsa (1928), Huene (1942), Romer (1956), Carroll (1988) and Walker (1990); to Crocodilomorphi by Gauthier et al. (1989), Clark et al. (2004), Fiorelli and Calvo (2008) and Nesbitt (2011); and to Crocodylomorpha by Irmis et al. (2013).
