Akanthosuchus was named by O'Neill et al. (1981). Its type is Akanthosuchus langstoni.

It was assigned to Crocodylidae by O'Neill et al. (1981); to Alligatoridae by Carroll (1988); and to Alligatoroidea by Hill and Lucas (2006).
