Taxonomy
Promacrauchenia cristata was named by Rovereto (1914). Its type specimen is MACN-PV 8463, a partial skull (fragmentary skull and associated dentaries), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Huayquerías de Biluco, which is in a Miocene/Pliocene terrestrial sandstone in Argentina. It is the type species of Huayqueriana.

It was recombined as Huayqueriana cristata by Riggs and Patterson (1939), Forasiepi et al. (2016).

Synonyms
  • Macrauchenidia latidens was named by Cabrera (1939). Its type specimen is MLP 37-III-7-2, a mandible (Gran parte de una mandíbula, en fragmentos, incluyendo una porción considerable de ambas ramas ascendentes y la región sinfisaria, muy deformada, con los i ,_ 3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Robilotte field - SE of Epecuén lagoon & E of Laguna de Epecuén, which is in a Huayquerian terrestrial siltstone/siltstone in the Epecuén Formation of Argentina.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Huayqueriana cristata by Soria (1986).
