Cardium glabrum was named by Goldfuss (1837).

It was recombined as Pterochaenia (Pterochaenia) glabra by Ruzicka (1949); it was recombined as Avicula glabra by Berry and Boucot (1973); it was recombined as Cheiopteria glabra by Pojeta et al. (1976).
