Pleurotoma (Bathytoma) piercei was named by Arnold (1909). Its type specimen is USNM 165578, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Bathytoma piercei by Anderson and Martin (1914); it was recombined as Turricula piercei by Grant, IV and Gale (1931), Addicott (1970).
