Titanopteryx was named by Arambourg (1959) [nec Enderlein (1935)]. Its type is Titanopteryx philadelphiae.
It was replaced with Arambourgiania by Nessov (1984).
It was assigned to Titanopterygiidae by Padian (1984); to Ornithocheiridae by Charig (1967), Carroll (1988); to Azhdarchidae by Bennett (1989); and to Azhdarchidae by Murry et al. (1991).
