Altispinax was named by Huene (1923).
It was synonymized subjectively with Megalosaurus by Romer (1956), Tatarinov (1964), Steel (1970); it was considered a nomen dubium by Holtz et al. (2004).
It was assigned to Megalosaurinae by Nopcsa (1928); to Carnosauria by Kuhn (1939); to Megalosauridae by Huene (1923), Swinton (1936), Huene (1948), Swinton (1970), Molnar (1980); to Spinosauridae by Walker (1964), Romer (1966), Taquet (1984), Carroll (1988), Kurzanov (1989); to Carnosauria by Ruiz-Omeñaca and Canudo (2003); and to Theropoda by Maisch (2016).
