Microceratops gobiensis was named by Bohlin (1953). Its type specimen is T. sh. V, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Tsondolein-Khuduk 2 (SSE), which is in a Campanian/Maastrichtian terrestrial conglomerate in the Ulansuhai Formation of China.

It was recombined as Microceratus gobiensis by Mateus (2008); it was considered a nomen dubium by Sereno (2000), Lambert et al. (2001); it was considered a nomen dubium by You and Dodson (2004).
Microceratops sulcidens was named by Bohlin (1953). It is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Chia-yü-kuan (SSE), which is in a Campanian/Maastrichtian lacustrine claystone in the Minhe Formation of China.

It was synonymized subjectively with Microceratops gobiensis by Dodson and Currie (1990); it was considered a nomen dubium by Sereno (2000), Lambert et al. (2001), You and Dodson (2004).
