Anchignathodus typicalis was named by Sweet (1970). Its type specimen is OSU 28017, a set of teeth, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Hindeodus minutus by Koike (1996); it was recombined as Hindeodus typicalis by Jiang et al. (2011).
