Placentidens was named by Russell et al. (1973). It is not extant. Its type is Placentidens lotus. It is the type genus of Placentidentinae. It was considered monophyletic by Jones and Beard (2023).
It was assigned to Plagiomenidae by Russell et al. (1973); and to Placentidentinae by Carroll (1988), Beard and Dawson (2009), Jones and Beard (2023).
