Sphenopteridium was named by Schimper (1874). It is not extant. Its type is Cyclopteris dissecta.

It was assigned to Pteridophyta by Andrews (1970); to Filicales by Lakhanpal et al. (1976); and to Plantae by Dobruskina (1995).
