Pecopteris defrancei was named by Brongniart (1834). It is not extant. It is the type species of Palaeoweichselia, Pseudopecopteris.
It was recombined as Pseudopecopteris defrancei by Grand'Eury (1877); it was recombined as Palaeoweichselia defrancei by Potonie and Gothan (1909).
