Taxonomy
Palaeocastor was named by Leidy (1869) ["new genus" according to Xu 1996, no reference to Martin]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Palaeocastorinae. It was considered polyphyletic by Rybczynski (2007).
It was synonymized subjectively with Castor by Cope (1881); it was synonymized subjectively with Steneofiber by Hay (1902).
It was assigned to Castoridae by Leidy (1869), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Palaeocastorinae by Korth (2001), Rybczynski (2007), Korth (2014).
