Taxonomy
Lagostomus was named by Brookes (1828). It is extant. Its type is Lagostomus trichodactylus. It is the type genus of Lagostominae. It was considered monophyletic by Rasia and Candela (2017).
It was assigned to Chinchillidae by Bennett (1833), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Lagostominae by Rasia and Candela (2017).
