Machaeromeryx was named by Matthew (1926). Its type is Machaeromeryx tragulus.

It was assigned to Cervidae by Matthew (1926); to Moschidae by Carroll (1988), Webb (1998); and to Blastomerycinae by Prothero (2007), Prothero (2008).
