Taxonomy
Prioinia was named by True (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Kellogg (1928).
It was synonymized subjectively with Prosqualodon by Cozzuol (2010); it was considered a nomen dubium by de Muizon (1988); it was corrected as Proinia by True (1910), Rovereto (1915), Kellogg (1928), Simpson (1945), Carroll (1988), Benton (1993), McKenna and Bell (1997), Geisler et al. (2012).
It was assigned to Iniinae by Rovereto (1915), Simpson (1945); to Platanistidae by Carroll (1988); to Iniidae by True (1910), Kellogg (1928), Benton (1993), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Odontoceti by Geisler et al. (2012).
