Leiotriletes crassus was named by Naumova (1949) [Amended by T.V. Jankauskas, N.S. Mikhailova, T.N. German. "Precambrian Microfossils of the Soviet Union," (1989), Nauka, Leningrad. AND E.J. Javaux, A.H. Knoll. "Micropaleontology of the Lower Mesoproterozoic Roper Group, Australia," (2017), Journal of Paleontology, 91, 199-229. ].

It was recombined as Leiosphaeridia crassa by Riedman et al. (2023).
