Gerastos cornutus was named by Goldfuss (1843). It is the type species of Cornuproetus, Cornuproetus (Cornuproetus).
It was recombined as Cornuproetus cornutus by Richter and Richter (1919); it was recombined as Cornuproetus (Cornuproetus) cornutus by Alberti (1969), Magrean and Van Viersen (2005).
