Scutella fairbanksi was named by Arnold (1907). Its type specimen is UCMP 11017 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Echinarachnius fairbanksi by Grant and Hertlein (1938); it was recombined as Kewia fairbanksi by Durham (1955).
