Scutella interlineata was named by Stimpson (1856).

It was recombined as Dendraster interlineatus by Clark and Twitchell (1915); it was recombined as Dendraster (Calaster) interlineatus by Kew (1920); it was recombined as Anorthoscutum interlineatum by Grant and Hertlein (1938); it was recombined as Scutellaster interlineatus by Durham (1955).
