Chirognathidae was named by Branson and Mehl (1944). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is the type family of Chirognathacea.

It was assigned to Chirognathacea by Clark et al. (1981); and to Prioniodinida by Sweet (1988), Pyle and Barnes (2002).
