Nothrotheriops was named by Hoffstetter (1954) [named as subgenus of Nothrotherium by Hoffstetter 1954; raised to genus level by Paula Couto (1971)]. It is not extant.
It was assigned to Megatheriidae by Paula Couto (1971), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Carroll (1988); to Nothrotheriidae by Amson et al. (2017); and to Nothrotheriinae by Gaudin (1995), Varela et al. (2019).
